The Opportunity

The Principal Geotechnical Engineer – Underground will be responsible to deliver safe and efficient geotechnical designs for underground workings across the business. You will play an integral role to develop and maintain corporate standards for geotechnical design, development, monitoring and quality control of underground workings and undertake quality assurance activities to ensure that these designs are implemented safely.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver safe and efficient underground designs and ground support, supporting pre-feasibility, feasibility and detailed design.
  • Develop and maintain operational systems and documents relevant to underground development, including ground control management plan (GCMP) and monitoring plans. Audit compliance to industry leading practice.
  • Develop and maintain standards and procedures for the safe management of underground hazards that reflect leading practice for our underground mining operations.
  • Provide risk-based geotechnical advice to operational mine sites, growth projects and other internal stakeholders.
  • Plan, budget, guide and support greenfields and brownfields geotechnical investigation and data collection programs aligned to business plans.
  • Prepare scopes of works, review deliverables and manage delivery from contractors and consultants.
  • Collaborate with internal and external SMEs to refine and develop underground designs and stope sequence.
  • Provide on-site support and technical advice in the implementation of designs.
  • Complete quality control and quality assurance inspections on site and provide leadership in resolving geotechnical and design challenges applying extensive industry experience.

What is required?

  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering, Engineering Geology or Geotechnical Engineering or related technical field.
  • Extensive experience in a similar leadership role, providing technical direction to all aspects of underground geotechnical engineering.
  • Practical (on-site) experience implementing large-scale, complex underground designs and associated monitoring programs.
  • Detailed understanding of regulatory framework, guidelines and industry leading practice relevant to underground development.
  • Advanced understanding geotechnical software for numerical modelling and analysis with ability to train others and review technical outcomes.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills, fostering excellence and collaboration across multidisciplinary teams. 
  • Ability to work strategically at portfolio level while supporting operational priorities. 
  • Well-developed communication skills– both oral and written
