The Opportunity

The Principal Water Engineer – Systems Design & Execution will lead the design, QA/QC, and delivery oversight of water infrastructure systems across all MinRes hubs – Onslow, Central Pilbara, and Lithium – ensuring our operations are supported by safe, efficient, and reliable water systems.

Reporting to the Manager – Water Engineering, this role will work company‑wide to create and govern technical standards and guidelines for water infrastructure, oversee execution by the Capital Projects & Site Infrastructure (CSI) team, and lead the takeover and commissioning process before handover to site NPI teams for operation.

As a senior engineering leader, you will integrate closely with the hydrogeology teams (to translate borefield and water source plans into engineered systems), the surface water team. You will also provide ongoing technical support to the operations teams to ensure systems are operated and maintained to the highest standards.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the company‑wide design and engineering standards for water infrastructure systems, including pipelines, borefields, storages, pumps, treatment facilities, and associated control systems.
  • Oversee QA/QC of detailed water system designs prepared by the CSI team, ensuring compliance with MinRes engineering guidelines and safety standards.
  • Manage the technical takeover process for completed projects, including commissioning checks, functional verification, and handover to NPI site teams.
  • Provide technical leadership in the planning and design phase to ensure systems meet water source and mine plan requirements, working in close collaboration with hydrogeology teams.
  • Support integration of control systems (including Miri, SCADA, and automation platforms) into water infrastructure designs and oversee their implementation.
  • Guide and mentor the Senior Water Engineer reporting to this role, ensuring consistent quality and delivery across projects.
  • Work closely with the surface water team to maintain seamless integration of water supply and system capacity with wider site water management plans.
  • Provide ongoing technical support to operations teams for optimising, maintaining, and upgrading water systems post‑handover.
  • Ensure designs align with operational, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee engineering governance, including compliance with regulatory and corporate standards.

What is required?

  • Tertiary qualifications in Civil, Mechanical, or Water Engineering (or closely related discipline).
  • Extensive experience in the design and project management of water infrastructure in the mining or resources sector.
  • Proven track record delivering water systems from concept through commissioning, including QA/QC oversight of execution work.
  • Strong expertise in pipeline hydraulics, pumping systems, borefield development, storage solutions, and water treatment technology.
  • Demonstrated experience creating and managing corporate engineering standards and guidelines.
  • Familiarity with control and automation systems for water infrastructure, including design and execution of SCADA‑based systems (Miri experience highly regarded).
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement skills with experience working closely with hydrogeologists, execution teams, and operational leaders.
  • Ability to integrate engineering designs with source water plans, mine plans, and operational needs.
  • Strong problem‑solving, communication, and leadership abilities, with proven experience mentoring technical staff.
  • Current WA driver’s licence.
